Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory of Australia. This city breaks all the stereotypes for Australian cities. It’s one of the furthest north cities on the continent, and it rests on the Timor Sea. That means Darwin is tropical, unlike what most people think of when they think of the dusty red deserts of the Land Down Under.

Darwin is also unique in that the city has been almost completely rebuilt four times. That’s right, from cyclones to Japanese air raids during World War II, Darwin has been smashed to bits several times in the last 180 years. However, that hasn’t stopped the city from rebuilding, resilient and dauntless as its locals are.

Darwin’s Art Scene

One might think that Darwin would not have developed a prolific art scene, given the demands the city has faced. But that’s not the case. Darwin is home to the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, the Darwin Entertainment Centre, the Darwin Convention Centre, the Northern Territory Museum and Art Gallery, the Defence of Darwin Experience, and the Darwin Fringe Festival. Darwin is also home to the annual Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, the longest-running indigenous peoples’ art award on the continent.

Darwin features some incredible, unique art influences seen nowhere else in Australia. Because Darwin is so close to South East Asia, much of the art in Darwin showcases Southeast Asian influences and Pacific Islander styles. That allows for a fantastic melding of European colonial art, Southeast Asian art, and indigenous Aboriginal art.
